Many academicians in ITU provide consultancy services and project partnerships to government departments and public institutions. In addition, protocols have been signed with many public institutions to produce and realize joint projects. ITU also carries out activities on developing social policies with the government.

DEPOSIT ENFORCEMENT SYSTEM TO BECOME MANDATORY IN 2024 WITH EFFORTS OF ITU

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Deposit Management System, which is prepared to recycle single-use beverage packaging and bring it into the economy, will start this year and become compulsory by 2024. Head of Zero Waste Department explained that the Turkish Deposit Return System (TÜDİS) is being carried out with ITU.

The Deposit Return & Gekap Consultation Workshop, organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and the Federation of Food and Beverage Industry Associations of Turkey (TGDF), was held in Antalya on Saturday, November 23.

The workshop was attended by TGDF Secretary General, TGDF Board Members, Head of Zero Waste Department, Prof. Dr. Erdem Görgün from ITU Environmental Engineering Department, TGDF Environment Commission Chairman and TGDF Logistics Commission Chairman.

Topics such as Deposit Return System, TGDF's Sustainability Vision, sectoral evaluation of GEKAP Regulation were discussed at the workshop.

In her speech, Head of Zero Waste Department Sadiye Karabulut said that the Ministry has been working on administrative sanctions and regulations regarding the receipt of declarations. Head of Zero Waste Department explained the work and process carried out on GEKAP and mentioned that the Turkish Deposit Return System (TÜDİS) is being carried out with ITU. This emphasizes the efforts of ITU which undertakes policy-focused research in collaboration with government departments.

Karabulut also talked about the changes made by the European Union in this field and the plastics strategy, adding that they aim to reduce dependence on waste imports.

 Making a presentation at the workshop, Prof. Erdem Görgün from ITU Department of Environmental Engineering emphasized the importance of data and said that as a society, there is a shortage of data. Stating that the circular economy has become indispensable, Prof. Dr. Görgün evaluated the issue from an academic perspective by giving examples from abroad. Prof. Dr. Görgün also touched upon the importance of public and private sector cooperation on this issue and listed the managerial and strategic steps to be taken in terms of waste management in Turkey

●      A cooperation protocol was signed between Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and Eti Maden Operations General Directorate (ETİMADEN). With the protocol, the two institutions will realize projects for identifying and evaluating the country’s resources and needs.

●      2557 TÜBİTAK-Belarus BRFFR Joint Project Call Results have been announced. The project of 3 faculty members from Turkey was considered worthy of support. Department of Chemistry faculty member Prof.Dr. Yusuf Yağcı's project was the only one that received support from ITU.

●      University-Industry Cooperation between ITU and MATIL- A cooperation protocol was signed between ITU and Materials Testing and Innovation Laboratories Co. (MATIL).

●      The 'Recovery of Rare Earth Elements from Coal Ashes and Coal Washing Wastes' PROJECT carried out jointly with Istanbul Technical University Department of Mineral Processing Engineering and General Directorate of Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKİ).

●      TÜBİTAK MAM-KUTUP ARAŞTIRMA PROJELERİ (2021-2022)

ITU carries out activities on developing social policies with the government. Appointed as a member of the Social Policies Board by the President, Prof. Dr. Lütfihak Alpkan has been carrying out this duty since 2018.
